Way to go, Iceland!

I’m in Indiana, which is a long story (ok, not really: wedding (not mine)). But it’s cold here, which put me in mind of Iceland, which of course leads me to this NPR story on clean energy technology in Iceland. The active volcanoes underneath the big island provide enough geothermal power to take care of most of their energy needs, thanks to clever government investment mid-last century- what oil dependancy?

There’s a pretty interesting section on “Why Icelanders are more hardcore than other people” involving drilling holes in active volcanoes to make this all happen. While most of the rest of the world does not have a volcano to fiddle with, heat differentials are under everybody’s bit of earth. Iceland is already exporting their expertise to parts unknown (well, not unknown, more like California). I’d be pleased if they’d export some of that volcano heat my way this weekend, but looks like I’ll have to make do with two scarves.
